The territory of Montecchio characterized by sunny hills is an ideal environment for the cultivation of olive trees and grape vines. The olive tree in particular represents a symbol of the country which is crossed by the “Strada dell’Olio” (oil road) and which has a large number of local producers.
The oil produced in Montecchio is recognized as DOP Umbria Extra Virgin Olive Oil from the Orvieto hills. From different and valuable cultivars (Frantoio, Leccino, Moraiolo, Pendolino, Dolge Agogia, San Felice, Maurino) a genuine product is obtained with an aromatic taste, low acidity and intense color. The link between the oil and the town of Montecchio dates back to distant times and still characterizes the economy and life of the town, for this reason there is also a Oil Museum at the ancient Frantoio Bartolomei where machinery, antiques and period images are exhibited that tell this long and fruitful link with the territory. Furthermore, in November the oil is the protagonist of the “Fiera dell’Olio” (Oil Fair).
