A special variety of the fruit widespread in the Orvieto area, but originally from Monteleone d’Orvieto, which has been evidenced since 1585. It is still cultivated in these hill areas in large single specimens. The tree is rustic and highly productive. This pear variety due to its shape or intense yellow color is also called “papera (duck)“. Its firm and grainy pulp was and is consumed mostly baked in the oven and served with honey. For its nutritional value, it has also deserved the name of “villano steak”, today it is still present in many recipes as a typical ingredient for desserts and tarts.
